Why we Dance?
Why I Dance? by Miss Andrea

Why I dance is a bit like the question “why I breathe”, both give me life!

I can’t remember not wanting to dance, even as a very young child going to my Ballet lessons were a highlight of my week. Probably my love for music was the start point, my response to a beautiful tune was to move to it. When I choose Classical Ballet I don’t recall but my pursuit of a dream meant considerable sacrifice for my parents and for myself. To become a specialist means to say ‘no’ to a lot of activities that my non-dance friends might have been doing.

I came to the UK [from Swaziland, in Southern Africa] to train at Tring Park. The training was intense and exacting, perfecting my technique and knowledge of Ballet, and working with all other dance genres. Studying music and drama too.

What is it about Ballet? The beautiful tutus, and of course pointe shoes play a big part. But the ethereal and fluid movements, the patterns and colour and the unison with other dancers response to glorious music all have to be at the top of the list.

Dancing in harmony with others is what I enjoy, I never wanted to be the solo dancer, alone with the responsibility of delivering a major role with technical perfection… No, definitely not for me.

Even when I was dancing professionally I always wanted to teach and particularly to choreograph and create dances and shows, and to include all who want to be involved. I enjoy teaching, encouraging and sharing my love and knowledge of Ballet, enabling young talent to blossom.
Why I Dance, by Miss Carrie

Throughout my life I’ve done many different styles of dance for many different reasons. Ballet is the main building block for all dance, from there I’ve been lucky enough to add Modern, Tap, Disco, Contemporary, Street Dance and Choreography to my dance experience, to name a few.

My passion and the reason I first started dancing was because I wanted to be a ballerina, I wanted to wear a tutu and dance on pointe. I loved watching ballerina’s and the way they seemed to glide across the stage effortlessly.

As I grew older my interests developed and I changed my passion from Ballet to Modern and Jazz, I loved this style of dance because it was current, the moves were different and I felt empowered when dancing, this helped me to have a release at a time when my body was changing and I struggled to understand my place in the world – dance was my familiar that was always there for me.

As I grew up, my passion changed to Contemporary. I was able to relate to the emotions and feelings behind the dance and I often felt more connected to the music and movement of the dance. I felt like I was sharing my soul when dancing.

My passion then changed to Tap. I loved the way I could lose myself in the rhythm of my feet and the way I could hear my accomplishments instead of seeing / feeling them. It gave me an instant feeling of triumph.

Now I’m an adult I love all styles of dance, but my fondness of Ballet has returned in particular, I find the music very calming and the exercises really help me to focus.

I have a passion for all styles of dance that have made me who I am today, I dance because it makes me happy. I find when I’ve had a bad day, that being around my dance family makes me laugh, it puts a smile on my face and I feel relaxed. Dance is my release from life, where I can escape reality and get lost in the music and my soul.

Why I Dance, by Miss Jasmine

I’ve danced ever since I was 4 years old. It’s been my favourite thing since then. It was so fun and exciting when I was little, I loved to show off my ‘good toes, naughty toes’ and would always be skipping in my garden or practising at home in my ballet uniform that I never wanted to take off! When I grew older it became a real passion. I wanted to succeed, I took all my exams and danced to the best of my ability. All day I would look forward to the moment I stepped into the studio for my lesson. I was very good friends with all the girls in my class and it was such a positive environment which made it a hundred times better. I enjoyed all the show I did from the age of 6 looking up to the big girls getting main parts and solos. I knew I wanted to be like them and have that moment on stage as well. When I was about 16 finally my time to get a main part and a solo came and it was incredible. I’ll never forget the feeling, dancing on stage by myself with the lights shining and the music playing loudly and everyone in the audience clapping after. I couldn’t wipe the smile of my face for days after.
